About this centre

In-Centre Class available

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes enable children of any age and ability to develop key foundations for learning. Our unique study method focuses on enabling children to work independently, giving them confidence in their abilities. They progress through small steps to gradually develop ability and fluency before moving on to the next topic. Kumon study is not based on school curriculum or age, allowing children the flexibility to revisit and build skills where they need to and progress beyond school level where their ability allows. Unlike traditional tuition, Kumon study fosters students’ skill in self-learning, building confidence and lessening reliance on a teacher.

Your child will be assessed to enable their Instructor to set work at just the right level for them. Through daily worksheet study they develop ability and fluency. Your child will visit their local study centre for study sessions up to twice a week, where their Instructor will observe their learning growth and set work accordingly. Kumon’s aim is to develop each child into a confident, independent and enthusiastic learner.

About the Instructor

Gráinne O'Donnell - Douglas

Hello, I’m Grainne O’Donnell, Instructor at the Douglas study centre.

Prior to Kumon, I worked in London as a mathematician in investment banking and oil trading for ten years. I received an award for the highest results in Ireland in Leaving Certificate maths, and graduated top of my class in both my engineering degree and master’s degree.

In 2008 I spent four months working in a school in Tanzania. I thoroughly enjoyed helping children develop academically and personally through positive motivation and support, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

I first came across Kumon when I was working in London and a number of colleagues had children enrolled onto the programmes. They were hugely impressed with how it taught them how to study effectively. After the birth of my third child I did a lot of research into ways I could fulfil my passion for education and I recalled the high praise for Kumon. I was inspired to open my own centre in Douglas as I know the Kumon Method would hugely benefit so many.

What I love about Kumon is that I can work individually with all of my students and tailor their development accordingly. I will ensure that they only progress to new concepts once previous ones have been mastered.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
