"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
Kumon gives children the ideal opportunity to develop self-learning skills and get further practice outside of school. Our programmes complement and support the school curricula. Kumon's philosophy always focuses on the long-term: the attributes and abilities every child will need to be successful throughout life. As our students develop fluency through the programmes they will also be acquiring and refining their study skills, and it is these that will make all the difference as they tackle school homework, projects and prepare for the pressure of timed standardised tests and exams.
Our maths and English programmes provide children with invaluable study skills:
are just some of the benefits. These advantages are not just great preparation for the demands of homework or revision at secondary school, but will stand them in excellent stead come standardised tests and exam time.
Whatever the topic, whatever the test, children need strong basic calculation skills and (later on) a solid understanding of algebra. Kumon students can develop a superb number sense and unrivalled mental calculation ability; they learn their times tables inside-out, and can manipulate fractions with ease. These are the skills that will ultimately make the difference in any school test.
Right across the curriculum, core skills in English are vital for school success. First and foremost, children need to be able to read, understand, digest and use the mass of information with which they will be presented in preparation for the standardised tests and exams in secondary school. When writing, success will depend on the breadth of their vocabulary, how widely-read they are, and their ability to construct coherent, grammatically correct sentences. The Kumon programme focuses on exactly these skills, and in so doing enhances a child's ability to tackle any school test.
