The Kumon study centre in Mallow opened in February 2005. During this time, we have helped hundreds of students unlock their potential on our maths and English programmes.
Kumon is a programme for children of all ages and abilities; currently students at the centre range in age from five to 16 years old. The centre is set in the Mallow GAA complex, so there is ample free parking and parents can wait in the comfort of the lounge while their children are in the centre.
Unlike the process of a traditional grinds, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies. Students advance ahead of their school level and hence develop confidence and self-esteem.
My name is Leigh and I joined Kumon in 2005. I first became aware of the Kumon study programmes when my children studied in Cork. I had always loved maths and logic and the structured nature of the Kumon programmes appealed to me. I was also an avid reader – authors such as Ian Fleming and Robert Ludlum, but the English programme has exposed me to a broader range of authors and interests.
I graduated from university with a science degree, but my background is in IT management. I was primarily responsible for the development of staff; setting and monitoring targets, motivation and encouragement; reviews and appraisals. These skills proved to be very relevant and transferable to my role as a Kumon Instructor.
I’m also a keen sportsman, currently trying to master the art of golf. As such, I recognise the importance of regular practice and see a synergy with the Kumon programmes. I’m proud to be the longest established Kumon Instructor in Ireland and of the achievements of my students. They are a constant source of inspiration. I enjoy seeing them improve and the confidence that success brings. I have also been the Instructor at the Wilton study centre since 2011.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
The registration and monthly fee varies slightly from centre to centre. Click here to find the fees for your local study centre.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
